Does Couples Who Toke Together Have More Sex?

Relationships are hard-work – and they require a certain amount of attention in all aspects to be successful. One of the areas that couples tend to struggle with over time is finding time for those more intimate encounters. While they may be plentiful in the beginning of a relationship as we start to fall into routine – and after years go by and marriages, children and life happen it can be more difficult to keep up with all your needs.

However, it appears that when it comes to sex, couples who consume cannabis are likely to have more sex than couples who don’t partake in the herb.

“Usually, people assume the more frequently you smoke, the worse it could be when it came to sex, but in fact, we learned the opposite was true,” Eisenberg said. His study was published in this week’s Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The study used data from the U.S. governments National Survey of Family Growth, which asked more than 28,000 women and around 23,000 men how often they had sex in the four weeks prior to the survey, and how frequently they had used cannabis in the previous year.

Interestingly, women who didn’t use cannabis reported having sex six times on average during that four-week period – but women who used marijuana daily had sex 7.1 times on average. Similarly, men who did not use cannabis said they had sex an average of 5.6 times over that 4-week period, while those who used marijuana daily claimed to have sex 6.9 times on average.

“Frequent marijuana use doesn’t seem to impair sexual motivation or performance. If anything, it’s associated with increased coital frequency,” said the study’s senior author, Michael Eisenberg, MD, assistant professor of urology. The lead author is Andrew Sun, MD, a resident in urology.

While this is not enough evidence to say there is a definite link between cannabis consumption and frequency of sex, there does appear to be evidence of a casual correlation between the two acts.

It may be that couples who smoke have more privacy, as it would be needed unless they live in a legal cannabis state – other theories include one that suspects couples who smoke incorporate sex into their smoking time as cannabis is known to enhance the experience for both men and women.

Whatever the reason, if you and your significant other like to smoke, vape or consume edibles together, chances are you’ll be enjoying each other more than the average couple.
